Legacy
Early morning, long before the sun rose. With his bicycle fully loaded with home-made wicker furniture, Hans Slettvoll walked towards the freighter on the dock with the goods he had worked on all night. This is how he laid the foundation for the family business he started at home in his basement in 1951. Little did he know what his journey would bring 70 years later.
Slettvoll's small furniture factory was housed in a two-storey home with a ground floor of 80 square metres. With a carpentry workshop in the basement, grandparents, dormitories, sewing room and office on the first floor, the family with two young daughters on the second floor, and storage in the attic - everyone took part in the production in one way or another. With courage, willingness to work and creative joy, brick by brick, Hans and his wife Bergit worked to create the Slettvoll brand that we know today - two generations later.
Courage to take risks
Torill and her sister Anne Lise were born with furniture-making in their blood. They were taught how to use scissors, sewing machines, hammers and pliers as young girls. The furniture production, like the two sisters, grew over time, and in the 1980s, Torill took over the helm from her parents. As a mother and a businesswoman, she took the risk of turning her family's dream into an international brand in a male-dominated furniture industry.
"As a family business, we have always been proud of our heritage and history, while also planning for the future. That is why we design furniture that will outlast trends, seasons and generations."
Torill Slettvoll
The way forward
Today, 70 years after their parents started up in the basement, the courage, willingness to work and creative joy have again been carried forward with Torill's own daughter, Live, and son-in-law, Bjørn-Helge, who have become important members of the company. Together, they carry on the legacy, with the common goal of creating homes that are good to live in - now and for the future.
